Pupils at The Firs School in Chester added a splash of sunshine to their school day on Friday 9 October as they took part in Hello Yellow Day, raising awareness of the importance of children’s mental health and wellbeing.
The school joined thousands of children and young people across the country in supporting Hello Yellow, an initiative organised by children and young people’s mental health charity YoungMinds to encourage open conversations about mental health and remind young people that they are not alone.
Pupils were invited to brighten up their school uniforms with yellow accessories, from socks and scarves to hair ribbons and jumpers, helping to spread a positive message of friendship, kindness and support.
As well as wearing yellow, children took part in special wellbeing lessons exploring the importance of recognising and talking about their feelings, looking out for their friends and knowing who they can turn to when they need support.
With the theme ‘Wear Yellow and Say Hello’, the day was designed to help children understand that even small gestures, such as asking someone how they are feeling or offering a friendly smile, can make a real difference.
David Girvan, Headteacher at The Firs School, said: “Children’s happiness and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do at The Firs, and Hello Yellow Day is a lovely opportunity to reinforce the importance of kindness, friendship and looking after one another.
“We want every child to feel comfortable talking about their feelings and to know that there is always someone ready to listen. By making these conversations part of everyday school life, we hope to help children develop the confidence and emotional awareness that will support them as they grow and learn.
“It has been wonderful to see everyone embracing the day and bringing a little extra sunshine into school.”
