At The Firs, we have always believed that how a child feels at school shapes how they learn.
Helping our pupils come to school with confidence, curiosity and a smile is at the heart of what we do. From their first day with us to their last, how a child feels when they walk through our doors each morning matters just as much as what they learn once they are here.
When children feel happy, secure and truly known, they have the confidence to ask questions, try something new, make mistakes, build friendships and discover what they are capable of.
This term, we are putting an extra spotlight on wellbeing and the small moments of joy that make school life special, including celebrating World Laughter Day.
Laughter can break down barriers, build friendships and turn ordinary moments into lasting memories. To mark the day, the whole school will be getting involved, with pupils, teachers and parents invited to share their best jokes and a special assembly challenge to discover who can make Headteacher David Girvan laugh first.
“A smile can change the course of a child’s day,” says Mr Girvan. “When we help children find joy in learning, they carry that joy into the world around them.”
At The Firs, we want learning to be something children enjoy, both academically and emotionally.
Whether a child is taking their first steps into Reception or progressing through the school, our priority remains the same: for every pupil to feel known, supported and excited about the day ahead.
We see every day how children flourish when they feel that they belong.
That sense of belonging is created through hundreds of seemingly small moments. It might be becoming completely absorbed in an imaginative story, working with friends to solve a problem, trying something for the first time or discovering a talent they didn't know they had.
These experiences help children learn more about themselves as well as the world around them. They develop confidence, independence and the resilience to keep going when something doesn't come easily.
We also understand that choosing a school is a big decision for any family. Websites and prospectuses can tell you a great deal, but there is no substitute for experiencing a school for yourself.
That's why we always encourage families to come and see The Firs in action: to meet our children and teachers, step inside our classrooms and experience the atmosphere for themselves.
We hope what they discover is a warm, values-led community where joy, kindness and curiosity sit comfortably alongside academic ambition – and where children are encouraged to learn, grow and, importantly, enjoy the journey.
