- Platinum sports awards
We are delighted and extremely proud to announce that The Firs have gained the coveted Platinum status for our commitment to the development of sport and competition across the school and into the community. This is an extremely prestigious award and one that proves that a small school can provide a wide range of sporting and competition opportunities with the right mindset! We have worked tirelessly over the last number of years ensuring our sporting performances match those being offered by bigger settings and we have been recognised for the high level of sporting participation we provide for all of our pupils.
As part of the process we had to demonstrate that we offered an exceptional level of;
- Participation -the number of young people at our school engaged in sporting activity?
- Competition – how many different sports are being played and how many competitions are being entered?
- Workforce – how many pupils are involved in leadership activities alongside taking part in competitions?
- Clubs – how many local links does your school have with clubs or establishments from the area?
To get Platinum status, we first had to achieve Gold status for 5 consecutive years. As we successfully achieved Gold again last year, we were eligible to apply for platinum. For this, Miss Roberts (our sports coordinator) had to write a case study all about how The Firs demonstrate a holistic whole school approach to delivering physical activity in line with the Chief Medical Officer’s (CMO) recommendation of a minimum of 60 active minutes a day.
Our case study was then sent to our local SGO (school games organiser) who, if they found our case study to be adequate, added their own statement about the school then submitted our platinum application to School Games, where our platinum application was assessed. Only 5 schools in Chester (out of 34 that applied) passed the application and achieved Platinum status.
Elizabeth Newstead our local School Games Organiser, stated that, “The Firs are a very proactive school, and over the years they have become more and more engaged, attending competitions, CPD, ambassador training, gifted and talented sessions, playground leader sessions etc. They have developed a comprehensive programme in the school across all the age groups that ensures the children are meeting the 60 active minutes, if not more and the school thoroughly deserve the Platinum award! “
