Summertime is a season of sunshine, BBQ’s, fetes, ice-creams, holidays, picnics and strawberries and cream. However, in their Food Technology class, Year 5 have been exploring the healthy side of summer – salads!
The students were set the task of creating their own nutritious and delicious salads. The class researched which fruit and vegetables are in season and devised their recipes by discussing flavour combinations, texture, how to prepare the fruit and vegetables – whether to chop or grate – and which parts to use, such as, the zest of a lemon or an orange.
On salad-making day, each student brought in an ingredient to share and set to work chopping, peeling, slicing and grating. The results were fresh, crispy and zingy salads which were eaten and enjoyed at snack-time – a tasty way to learn about healthy eating and the seasonality of fruit and vegetables.
