To support the maths curriculum the Firs School subscribes to Maths-Whizz, a personal on-line Maths tutor which “Caters to your child’s unique ability helping them reach their true potential and preparing them for success in school”.
Children have access to this at home and are encouraged to spend 45 to 60 minutes per week in tutor mode as part of their homework routine. This should be divided into 2 or 3 shorter sessions of about 20 minutes. We recommend that your child should continue to use Maths-Whizz during the school holidays, in order to receive maximum benefits from the scheme. The average expected maths age improvement over 12 months is between 1.3 and 1.6 years.
Children receive lessons in all the Maths topics, but extra practice is given in weaker topics. In this way, over time, their Maths age not only improves, but they also catch up in areas where they need more practice, giving them a more ’rounded’ Maths profile. Lessons are delivered over the internet and come in the form of interactive animations. Over 1200 animations are directly matched to the National Curriculum, which means learning is related to the work they will cover at school. Each animation covers a specific learning objective, and starts with a “teacher section” where the maths concept is introduced in a visual and engaging way. This is followed by interactive animated questions. Children are sometimes presented with lessons they have done before, and this is entirely intentional. It is important that children progress only when they have fully understood.
As children work through Maths-Whizz, they will earn credits, which can be used to buy virtual pets and other items for their ‘play area’, accessed from their study, which they can visit after completing their lessons. Click the help menu in the study for lots of fun ideas. Both the study and play area can be customised for that personal touch.
