Firs Parent Group Spring 2017 Newsletter

Welcome to the FPG newsletter. We had a busy Autumn term and enjoyed lots of exciting events whilst raising a fantastic sum of money for the school. Thank you to everyone who has participated in our events, either by attending them or by volunteering your time over this last term. We really value every contribution no matter how small, The Firs community greatly benefits from your generosity.

Autumn Term – What we did..

The FPG raised a fantastic total of £8530 which has now been passed to the school and has gone towards the resurfacing of the field, the children are loving their new play surface!

Thank you to our wonderful Sparkle Ball committee who raised £6200

The Christmas Fair raised £1615 a massive thank you to all those who volunteered on the day, contributed prizes and cakes and to those who attended.

Calendars and Christmas cards raised £715

Food Bank – A special thank you to Lou Bowden who collected and transported a total of 496kg of food in 2016 to the West Cheshire Food Bank. The next collection date will be Thursday 23rd March, this will be for general food stuffs and also Easter Eggs.

We also held a second hand uniform sale, a Macmillan coffee morning, supported the school in their cross country Children in Need event and the Firs Football tournament. Thank you to all parents who came along, baked a cake and volunteered their time at these events.

Each year the FPG donate money towards a Christmas treat for the children and this year we paid for a theatre company to come in and perform the pantomime Dick Whittington in our new school hall.

Spring Term – Looking forward…

Coffee Mornings

We will continue with our weekly well attended Parent Cafe. These run every Wednesday morning and on the first Friday of each month after drop off in the Heywood room. Please do pop in and have a coffee, cake and get to know other parents in the Firs community. Children are very welcome, we have toys, juice and biscuits and plenty of space for pushchairs!

Second Hand Uniform Sale

We will hold a second hand uniform sale in the Heywood room on Monday 20th March at 3pm – 4.30pm and Tuesday 21st March at 8:30am – 9:30am ready for summer uniform requirements. If you are able to help please contact Mrs Austin

Quiz Night

We are holding the first Firs parent Quiz Night on Friday 10th March @7.30pm.  It will be £5 per person which will include cheese and nibbles and you can bring your own alcohol. Teams of up to 6 people per team, you can organise your teams beforehand or join a team on the night. Look out for the quiz letter in your child’s bookbag, complete the form to order your tickets and put in the FPG postbox in the entrance hall. Please support this new venture, it will be a lot of fun.

Contact Tea Party

Contact the Elderly is a charity supported by a network of volunteers that organise monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people aged 75 and over, who live alone, offering regular and vital friendship links every month.  This is a charity that staff and parents from The Firs have supported for many years now, opening up their homes to offer friendship to local elderly people.  This year the FPG have decided to host a tea party in school on the afternoon of Sunday 23rd April and we would love it if you could get involved.  We will be looking for volunteers to help serve refreshments on the day.  If this is something you would like to get involved in please email me, Rachel –   fpg@firsschool.org

Red Nose Day coffee morning and bake sale

Our charity fundraiser this term will be a coffee morning and bake sale in the Heywood room on Friday 24th March after drop off for Red Nose day.  We would really appreciate cake donations for the bake sale on the Friday morning. Please join us for a coffee, cake and catch up.

Book Fair

We will be holding our annual Book Fair again this year where a range of children’s books can be bought. In return the school will receive a portion of the money raised to buy books for the school. It will be held in the Heywood room every morning and afternoon from Monday 6th to Friday 10th March – we will be looking for two volunteers to help each morning 8:30-9:30am and two volunteers for the afternoon 15:00-15:45.  If you would like to volunteer please email Mrs Austin who is organising this event.

FPG Meeting

The next FPG meeting will be on Friday 10th February in the Heywood Room at 9am.

Summer Term – Save the Date

The Great British Firs Fete

Our annual Summer Fair will this year be held on Saturday 17th June 1.00pm-4.00pm. We are already looking forward to the Great British Firs Fete and trust the sun will shine! We are looking to put a parent committee together shortly to start to plan for this and would welcome your input. If you would like to be on this planning committee you can either attend the next FPG meeting or email fpg@firsschool.org..  We will be looking for a team to help with the creative side of decorating the event, ideas and help for fun stalls for the children.  Our first Summer Fair Committee meeting will be held on Friday 3rd March after the FPG coffee morning in the Heywood room.

Another FPG initiative for Summer is to create a Firs family recipe book.  We hope you and your children will get involved and start to think about your favourite family recipes that can be submitted for the book.  We hope to have a special feature from Chef with some of the children’s favourite lunch time meals. We aim to produce this for the summer fair and have a special judge join us for a family Bake Off competition.
