The Firs takes part in Rhino Mania!

We were excited at the opportunity to participate in Chester’s huge art exhibition ‘Rhino Mania’. The trail will include over a hundred rhinos from Cheshire West and Chester schools from July for 10 weeks.

With conservation and the environment being a hot topic, this project and supporting educational material enabled us to incorporate learning about the plight of the rhinos into the curriculum as well as holding an exciting design competition.

Each child was given a template to create a rhino design for the school and winners were selected from each class or year group.

The overall winners were Olivia Durnall and Charles Lanni from year 5 who were outraged by rhinos being killed by poachers for their horns. Their designs were amalgamated to paint onto the sculpture with Fir trees replacing apple trees to represent the school.

All of the winners formed the painting team who worked fantastically and enthusiastically to paint the sculpture. It was an exciting challenge that the whole school has become proud of. Many children have told me that they have spotted ‘Humfree’ in location outside the Visitor’s Centre near the Town Hall. ( From September he will return to take up residence in our school grounds!)

Hammond Drama Workshop

Every year, students from the Hammond School visit us with a drama workshop. This year the theme was “Caring and Sharing”, (an old favourite of Mrs. Johnson as it happens) and years 5 and 6 had a terrific morning. We were particularly pleased, as we always are, to see one of our ex-pupils, looking very grown up and confident. Many thanks to all the multi-talented Hammond students and staff for including us in their whistle-stop tour.

We really enjoyed it: thank you for doing the work shop with us.
I enjoyed it so much and I would like the Hammond to come again.
The Hammond workshop was very good almost excellent.
Thank you for coming and I really enjoyed it. Sadly I won’t be there next year to enjoy it all over again.

I really enjoyed the workshop, it was fun performing. I also liked the bit where they contributed gifts for the people in Africa – that bit was funny.

Very funny and very exciting I’m glad you came here. It was the best workshop we’ve ever had. I loved being the granny. It was great and there was loads of humour in it and I liked the fact that we got to join in ***** stars.

Fantastic flip flops in Y5

In year 5 D & T we have all the best challenges: first making and tasting healthy cereal bars and then making our own cereal bars (and tasting lots of commercially produced ones) and now making our own summer sandals. Here are the first completed examples this year: watch this space to see the rest, hot off the press (or, in this case, hot off the glue gun)

Goldilocks - The Musical - by Y6

Make sure you get your tickets for our production of Roald Dahl’s “Goldilocks” to be performed at St. Columbas hall on Friday 2nd July at 7pm. All parents, family and friends are welcome. Tickets are £5 and sold in aid of the Y6 chosen charity “Help for Heroes”.

Eco club news

The Eco club has been busy this term in the Garden. We have grown lots of different types of lettuce in one of our new raised beds (kindly made for us by Mr. Cartlidge) and in the other we have radishes, leeks, carrots and pumpkins on the go. We carefully planted our seeds back at the beginning of May and last week we all took a bag of vegetables home, very satisfying after all our hard work watering and weeding over the last few weeks. Do come and have a look at our beds, they are located next to the school pond at the end of the Kindergarten play space.

Many thanks to Mrs Egan for running our “Let’s Bike” course this month. She did it very well at very short notice. Y6 are now thoroughly prepared for the road!

Barn Dance raises over £800 for charity!

Well done to all who organised and attended the FSDF Barn Dance at All Saints Church last Saturday. The dancing may not have been as synchronised as the Y1 class last year but was approached with enthusiasm with everyone taking part. The Devil’s fire band were brilliant and the food provided extremely tasty. Can someone tell me where to get the Chilli and Lemon Grass pate from? Best of all the FSDF raised over £800 to go to the Countess of Chester Childrens Fund and the Lauren Brown Fund.

Lauren’s grandfather was there and told us about the fund. Lauren Brown died in February 2010 at the age of 8 after a year’s long battle with Cancer. Her parents spent many a night sleeping in a chair at Laurens bedside and has devoted many hours to raise funds to help the Childrens’ ward in The Maelor hospital with the purchase of TV’s for the kids cubes and beds for the parents to get a decent nights sleep.

Year 4 Trip to Wirral Country Park

As part of our science topic on Habitats Year 4 went to Wirral Country Park on Thursday 10th June to see for ourselves some of the animals and plants that live in the different habitats found there. We spent time looking at a variety of habitats including long grass, ponds, hedgerows, short grass and the shoreline. We were amazed at how many different types of plants and animals we could see. We discovered that when you take time to stop, look and listen you can find a whole incredible world which is all too easy to miss.
