Chess club

The Chess club is now up and running every Thursday lunchtime. We have entered into the British Land Chess Challenge so prizes are on offer and if we have any really talented chess players there is the opportunity to play children from the area and even nationally.

In round 3 we had several matches end up in stalemate where one side had many more pieces than the other but slipped up by getting into stalemate. For what stalemate is and how to avoid it follow this link.

In round 4 the top of the table clash between Rishi and Matthew happened. Rishi should have won but ended up getting lured into stalemate. We really need to learn how to close out winning positions.

In round 5 we still needed to learn how to force checkmate when we have a lots more pieces than the opposition.

In round 6 Matthew made his lead secure. There were still a lot of stalemates and we had to be reminded about setting the board out with the bottom right hand corner white and the queen on it’s own colour.

In the last round of the UK Chess Challenge our leader Matthew was beaten by Oliver. Well done to Oliver but Matthew had enough points to make sure of winning the challenge. We will now enquire about the regional event to be held in May.

After 7 rounds the final leader board was;

Name Points
Matthew C 18
Oliver H 16
Rishi L 15
Charles M 14
Jacob R 13
Jamie B 13
