Good afternoon from Canada
I am doing a short biography on my grandfather, Mr Thomas Dodd (1896-1975). He lived quite close to your location (#30 Well Lane) and, going through some old family records, it seems after he retired from the GWR in 1961, he took up some part time gardening for the school. This was unpaid of course. He did it because he loved gardens anyway, loved the kids, and had the time. Apparently, at his funeral (the New Church, 12 February 1975) the children thought enough of him to send flowers and some attended as well.
All of which is to say, I think a photo of your school might be appropriate in his bio. Would it be possible for you to post some more photos of the school building on your web site? Or e mail me some, if that is easier? Thank you in advance,
Mr. Colin Affleck

Hello there Mr Affleck. I’ve spoken to my father and he remembers Thomas Dodd from the time my grandmother ran the school. Please find some photos of the school in our open morning photo set http://www.flickr.com/photos/11940755@N03/sets/72157607225932506/show/with/2848367798/ Regards Tim Longman
I attended the Firs School from 1965 to 1972 when I left to go to the Queen’s School.
I have never visited the school or seen this web-site since leaving Chester in 1975 and was pleased to find so much unchanged. Mrs Longman was the Headmistress whilst I was at school, her son Teddy would occassionally visit and take assemblies,we loved these because they seemed so exciting.
I don’t recognise the children in the photo above. The books were given to us as prizes and were carefully chosen by Mrs Longman. I was given a book on archaeology and went on to read this subject at Bristol University.
I would love to look at some of your archive material. My family now live near Oxford and I work at the University as a College Nurse.
Thank you ,
